Starting with footsteps, WALKING THE TUNDRA is a rich collage film that uses a variety of experimental film techniques drawing upon the history of the American Avant-Garde. It captures a moment in thought, using modern methods of transportation metaphorically and ending with footsteps thus completing a circle. "This block of film could be described: a city scape - above trees / the human is: buzz cold / in vision / steps down from its / train." - J. Writer
"The layering of hand-painted and photographic images is impressive." - Stan Brakhage
1993, 16mm, b&w/color/so, 4.5m, $20
A hand-painted film inspired by Medieval stained glass and the paintings of Chagall. Enigmatic in form, I, ZUPT 49 is a spiritual journey through consciousness.
"A beautiful film." - Ernie Gehr
1994, 16mm, color/so, 3m, $20
A hand-painted film inspired by high gothic stained glass and the discovery of a baby star cluster in the crab nebula; a concomitant, cosmic journey through consciousness and space.
1995-1996, 16mm, color/si, 2.75m, $20
A companion film to WALKING THE TUNDRA. It is a meditation on modernity. In a way it is an attempt to go below the surface of the street to find water. Water in this case being a spiritual gasoline. But, just as the construction workers of the film have discovered only rubbish and dust, so does the filmmaker. The water he seeks only appears to us as red or blue flickerings that give temporal relief from modernitys contrasting extremities.
1998, 16mm, b&w/color/si, 5.5m, $20
THE HANKOOK TRILOGY is an attempt to capture the daily rhythms of Korean society. In this sense it is a series of films caught between South Korea's modernity and its traditional currents. CHEONG JU echoes like a cleaver hitting a cutting block while cell phones and pop music can be heard in the background. NE3 is a play between the rigid geometry of neon signs and the frenzy of night life. OL SHE GU is a celebration of a majestic culture through Salmulnoree (a traditional four-instrument percussive style of music).
Note: The Hankook Trilogy is a series of interdependent films that can be shown individually or together as a group in the following order. Thanks to Choi Woo Yoon. Without his help this trilogy would not exist.
Named after the South Korean city I lived in for over a year, CHEONG JU is a time capsule with a choreographed editing style which flows like a market vendor cutting fish and a child chasing pigeons in a park. Lush in pastels, it portrays the subtle and not so subtle rhythms of daily life in a small Korean city.
1999, 16mm color/si, 6m, $25
A play between gestured camera strokes and the harsh geometry of neon signs. "An exquisite interpretation of Korean night life." (Oh Man Bok)
1999, 16mm, color/si, 5m, $25
OL SHE GU is a cine-graph of a Korean traditional drum and dance performance called Salmulnoree. Salmulnoree literally translated means a four-instrument song. During the breaks in the performance, the Salmulnoree group will urge the audience to say ol she gu ("you rock"): hence the title of the film. Thanks to Kim Dok Soo Salmulnoree.
1999, 16mm, color/so, 3m, $25
Special Package: $50 all three parts.
